New iOS 7 Features - App Store Updates

A lot will change when Apple releases iOS 7, the latest update to its mobile operating system, this fall. While the key functionality of your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch running the software will remain the same, the new version includes several updates to make using your device even easier. One of these updates will enable you to find new apps more easily as well as ensuring that your existing apps are always up to date.

It's hard to believe that Apple's App Store recently celebrated its fifth anniversary. In that time, the number of applications developed by third parties has grown from a few thousand to almost 1 million. When there are that many apps to choose between, it's understandable that you may have trouble deciding which ones to download. While Apple has always tried to help guide users in the right direction using its lists of the top apps and its Genius function in the App Store, it takes personalization one step further in iOS 7.

The latest version of the App Store has a page called Apps Near Me, which will let you know what apps people in your vicinity are currently downloading. The function promises to be helpful if, for instance, you are visiting a certain landmark or a new city and want to know what apps will help you get around. Say you are going to look at the artwork in The Louvre. The App Store will be able to use your location to recommend apps that other visitors use when visiting the museum to help learn about the works of art and get the lay of the land in the sprawling building. The feature might also help you figure out public transit, discover wait times at your local theme park, or decide where to walk the dog.

The next new function of the App Store will specifically personalize the experience for parents of young children. You likely have been overwhelmed by the myriad of apps available for kids, and may not know which ones are suitable for your tot's current stage of development. The new Kids category in the App Store seeks to make the process of choosing apps for your kids easier by separating the recommendations based on the age of your child. Find out what apps are popular among other 5-year-olds, and your little one may easily find his next favorite game.

The last update to the App Store is the simplest, but it's the one that will likely excite most iOS users. Rather than having to click through the Updates section of the App Store every time a new version of your favorite games and tools are released, your device will automatically download and install updates as they become available. Not only can you kiss goodbye the arduous process of waiting for several downloads at once, but also you will no longer be nagged by the seemingly constant red badge alerting you about impending updates.

While you may have already been quite happy with the functionality and performance of the existing App Store, Apple is doing all it can to make the user experience even better. At its heart, the major overhaul coming in iOS 7 isn't about fixing something that isn't broken. Instead, it focuses on streamlining experiences and making the operation of your device easier so that you can spend more time doing what you want.
